Conroe Independent School District

The Montgomery County Community School District covers 348 square miles, and features 65 campuses spread out across its 348-square-mile coverage area. It primarily serves Conroe as well as several surrounding municipalities such as Cut and Shoot, Oak Ridge North and Shenandoah; in addition to numerous unincorporated areas and smaller municipalities.

As student populations increase, districts must adapt their plans. Conroe ISD north of Houston decided to include “The Perks of Being a Wallflower” in its high schools’ libraries as part of this adjustment.

Student Body

Conroe ISD is widely recognized for its exceptional academic success. Their schools routinely outshone state average scores on standardized tests and academic competitions. Niche, an education ranking and review site, recognized them in 2024 with multiple accolades: Best School District Overall in Montgomery County; Most Diverse School District; Best Place to Teach and Best District for Student Athletes.

With its large student population, the district is expanding quickly. Campuses are reaching capacity quickly and administrators are making every effort possible to accommodate its rapid expansion – from portable buildings and hiring more teachers, to resizing schools completely if necessary. Some schools may even become so full they no longer accept new students!

Grade Levels

Conroe ISD SSO students in grades 3-8 scored well above state and regional averages on this year’s State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) tests, showing marked increases over previous years’ reading and math scores – in particular eighth grade reading scores had improved considerably compared with last year.

Students enrolled in Career and Technical Education courses from CISD grades 7-12 can enroll in various topics like culinary arts, automotive repair and electronics technology.

In 2021-2022, 41 high school music students at six schools earned recognition from Texas Music Educators Association All-State musicians – an outstanding accomplishment within CISD that speaks volumes for its outstanding teachers. CTE curriculum in CISD includes 13 career clusters and 29 programs of study to support these musicians’ studies.

Academics

Conroe ISD is one of the premier school districts in Texas. Serving residents from Conroe, Shenandoah, Spring and Oak Ridge North communities alike, Conroe ISD boasts an extensive curriculum, cutting-edge career technical education classes and an exceptional fine arts program – among many other offerings.

Conroe ISD teachers enjoy ample professional development opportunities through its staff development program, and through these programs teachers learn new skills and educational models that benefit their students as well as accessing new technology resources to enhance classroom learning environments and aid with classroom management.

District 161 schools offer families of K-12 children an ideal learning experience, featuring academically competitive schools that prepare their pupils for higher education. GreatSchools consistently rates them highly; furthermore, their students perform significantly better on state exams than students attending other Texas schools.

Athletics

Conroe ISD’s athletic programs provide students with experiences that help develop character and a sense of pride in their school while simultaneously developing physical, social, and intellectual skills. Our mission is to enable all our students to reach their maximum athletic potential within a program which promotes integrity, academics, attitude perseverance and responsibility.

Niche.com recently awarded CISD as Montgomery County’s best overall school district, earning top scores for teacher effectiveness and resources and facilities. Furthermore, two consecutive years saw it named Best Place to Teach and Best District for Student Athletes within Montgomery County. Furthermore, its commitment to maintaining cost-effective operations and financial stability were widely noted as well.

Fine Arts

CISD is extremely proud to boast numerous fine arts programs including band, choir and orchestra. Recently CISD was honored as a 2022 Music Educators Association District of Distinction recipient as well as being awarded 9 times by National Association of Music Merchants as Best Communities for Music Education awards.

Students in grades 5-6 may participate in Mixed Choir as part of their Fine Arts block. This auditioned choir meets on Monday and Wednesday mornings from 7:40-8:40 AM for rehearsal.

District is proud of its outstanding Career and Technical Education (CTE) curriculum, enabling students in grades 7-12 to select from 13 career clusters and 29 programs of study.
