Ayurvedic Management of Obesity

Obesity can be more than a condition. Obesity can lead to severe and complicated health problems and other disorders. Obese people are more likely to develop heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, and other health issues. People with obesity are more common than people with malnutrition. The threat of childhood obesity is also more significant than ever.

Obesity Definition

An abnormal or excessive accumulation of fat poses a health risk. A body mass index of 25 or more is considered overweight. A body mass index greater than 30 is deemed to be obese. (WHO definition)

BMI is the person’s body mass in kilograms divided by their height in meters. Your BMI is often the first measure to evaluate your overall health.

Obesity Causes

Genetic causes: Obesity is a result of hereditary characteristics and environmental factors. Research shows that obesity is more common in families with a specific gene called MC4R.

Behavioral causes: These include high energy diets and high sugar intake, poor eating patterns, low exercise, and sedentary living.

Metabolic causes: Obesity is a significant component of metabolic syndrome. It is closely linked to insulin resistance, obesity, and inactivity.

Hormonal causes: Obesity may be caused by a variety of endocrine alterations. Obesity can be caused by hormonal disorders such as hypothyroidism and Cushing’s syndrome.

Obesity Risk Factors

Many factors can cause obesity.

  • Genetic influence: Experts believe that obesity tends to run in families.
  • Lifestyle This refers to a poor diet and a sedentary lifestyle. A poor diet includes high-calorie food, fast foods, and high-calorie drinks. A low-fiber diet can also cause obesity. Weight gain is strongly linked to inactivity.
  • Health and medication: Some diseases, such as hypothyroidism, Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOD), and Cushing syndrome, can cause obesity. Some steroids, anti-diabetic medications, and antipsychotic drugs can lead to obesity.
  • Insufficient sleep: This can lead to a disruption in your metabolism, which could cause obesity.
  • Stress: Depression and anxiety can sometimes lead to obesity.

Complications

Obese people are more likely to have health problems like

  • Problems with gynecology
  • Digestive issues
  • Sleep deprivation
  • Osteoarthritis
  • Cosmetic issues
  • Problems with the mind

Ayurvedic advice for Weight Loss

Ayurveda describes Obesity and Sthoulya. Charaka Samhitha explains in detail the Etiology, symptoms, and treatment of Sthoulya. Sthoulyatha can also be presented with diabetes. Vagbhata represents the solution for obese people in Ashtanga Ingraham. Ayurveda recommends a multi-pronged approach to managing obesity. Lifestyle modifications, preventive measures, and medical management are part of the treatment.

  2. Ayurveda also describes a healthy lifestyle. For a healthy lifestyle, there are both daily and seasonal routines. Classic Ayurvedic texts such as Charaka Samhitha also explain the importance of dietary practices. You should follow a daily routine for everything. Wake up at night.

  4. At least seven hours of sleep is recommended for a good night’s sleep.

Treatment

a)Udvartana (powder massage): Powder is used to rub the body.

c)Swedana (fomentation). A steam bath aids in weight loss.

d)Applications of different Kizhi (Potali). The use of appropriate Pottalies can help to reduce weight.

Panchakarma Procedure

Panchakarma is a combination of five detoxification methods (medicated enema and medicine-induced vomiting) and drug-induced purgation and bloodletting. These Panchakarmas treatments are pre-and post-preparatory procedures that must be performed only under medical supervision.
